speratic engine prob.

hey yall really need a place to strat..so my wifes truck is a 1981 toyota truck .the problem is that it has a problem dieing at stop signs and red lights unless you rev the hell outta it wich sounded like a carb issue but also youll be going down the freeway and the engine will just cut out for a second without sputtering or anything for a second and then start up again even with yer foot on the gas .the problem is it dosnt happen all the time it ran great for 2 weeks and just yeaterday started doing it again.it just past smog so i kinda ruled that out.im not good with toyotas so if yall could help point me in a direction to start id really appreciate it its her daily driver ..thanks guys

That sounds kind of similar to what happened to mine, except I could always keep mine going if I had my foot on the gas. Mine was the fuel cut (also known as idle cut) solenoid. But like I said, mine would stay running if I kept my foot on the gas so it doesn't sound like that's your problem.

The best thing to do in any situation like this is rule things out, one by one. Test spark. Test fuel. Test compression.

If it's intermittent, it'll be hard to nail down the fuel and spark side of things...but if you get a service manual and test the ignitor and coil and stuff like that, it might tell you something. You might have multiple things going on but I don't know...

It passed smog? That would make me think it's not anything on the emissions side, which can be real pain to track down. I'm kinda thinking it's on the spark/electrical side. Hopefully somebody's run into this before and will respond.

I flat out hate intermittent problems. Sometimes I get where I wish the rig would just quit running, so I could finally figure out what's going on.

Does that year have points? Sometimes the ignition wires will rub on something and cause intermittent shorts, like where the wire will be moving a bit.

Does anything look wrong with the old one?

I wonder if my truck has that. I've never even pulled off the distributor cap. I figured I would do what ever passes for a tune up on these when my odometer gets up to 30,000 miles, which could take another year or so.
