Rebuilt W50 trans

Earlier this year I busted the shift linkage in my transmission and got a junkyard tranny as a quick fix.

Well, a couple of weeks ago this replacement trans started making some new noises.....noises that I didn't like, so I took the old tranny in to get rebuilt.

Apparently this was a good thing. They replaced the reverse gear, the entire shift linkage assembly, all the bearings and the main input shaft, the bearings on which were so bad they had worn quite a bit of material off. All this and the old trans never even made as much noise as the replacement did.

Estimate: "$350 flat fee for labor*, plus parts. I'd guess about $6-800 depending on what needs to be replaced".
Actual charge: $765 Parts and Labor.

Not too bad I suppose concidering all that was replaced. I was hoping for around $500, but dreading the possibility of $1000+. Turn around was about 3 days (due to a 'wrong parts' snafu).

Tomorrow comes the swap. Maybe NOW I'll be able to hear myself think when I'm driving.

*At the average going shop rate of ~$100/hr that mean a chars of three hours labor. Even for experienced rebuilders, that's a pretty quick pace. Not a 'rush job', but not screwing the pooch either.

I think that you got a reasonable deal on your repair. A rebuilt one from Marlin is about the same price, but than you have to add the core charge and shipping...

2 1/2 months later....

I dropped fifth gear on the way home from work today. I wasn't even under load....just cruising along the freeway at ~55 mph, and *pink* reeeEEEEEEEEVVVVvvvvvv........

1-4 work fine, but I get no load transfer in fifth gear.
