a little L-Series Transmission and throw out bearing Trivia

L-43 side shifter:

Top one might be an L-50, will have to check with TrekkerPaul, gave it to him for scrap...bearings etc are shot to crap
bottom one is an L-52 based on this tidbit:

If so then it's a L52. It is a small 1/8" or 1/4" hole (I don't know the actual size) and it's positioned on the machined release bearing section of the nose cone straight down at 6 o'clock. Marlin said he'll simply reach into the bellhousing and grab the nose cone, and immediately he'll know if it's a L50 or L52 if he feels that hole or not.

That is much better than removing the nose cone, so definitely cool, thanks Marlin!

now this is where I thought things were a little wierd. I got to thinking I might as well put in a new throw out bearing in before I swapped transmissions.
here is what I found:
bottom: L43 (out of an '80) throw out bearing and pivot -heavy duty cast piece
middle: L50? (came out of my '81 originally) stamped pivot
top: L52 bearing and stamped pivot (lack of a better term)

this is what I found an interesting bit of trivia- the ears that hold the bearing to the pivot are all different shapes and sizes..
bottom-L43 long and tapered mounts for the clips:
middle= L50 wide and long mounts for the clips
top L-52 wide narrow:

left is L52, Middle L50(?) with a lip for the bearing to mount on, right L43:

does this make a bit of difference on the throw out bearings...dunno, just thought i would throw out what I found...
I am using the bearing thing with the lip on it...
by the way, I am gonna invest in a press sometime..getting bearings off is a PITA

You've got two bottoms listed in the photo with the forks and bearings. Had me confused, as the the top one is the L52 fork.

Good info that might come in handy to someone! I agree.

A press is a good thing. I just have machine shops press my bearings on and off now. After getting real frustrated trying to get my throwout bearing off, and almost more frustrated trying to get t-case bearings on, I just as a matter of course bring them to a machine shop and don't even deal with it. Until or unless I get my own press.

The bearing cup I just pulled from mine looks like the one you're saying is from an L50, except mine's an L45 (4 speed). Mine also had some other kind of throwout on it, there was a bearing race near the top of what looked like some kind of sleeve pressed onto the whole thing. Not sure what that thing is.

On the left you see the "new" bearing (for an '83, probably L50/52?) On the right the old bearing (I had already taken it off the spindle, so you can see the BBs)

Here is the bearing separated from the cup, with what I think is a sleeve still pressed on.

And finally the 2 bearings side-by-side

Yes. All 1981 - 1995 clutch forks are interchangeable.

The main thing to note is that after 1980 Toyota ended adjustable clutches across the board in Hilux pickups as well as Land Cruisers. 1979-1980 L43 I believe had a return spring on the cast iron clutch fork which was only needed for the adjustability feature (today we can only adjust the placement of the pedal, but back in the day you used to be able to adjust where the clutch engagement point was along the clutch pedal stroke at the plunger for the clutch master cylinder independent of the clutch pedal's location). Starting in 1981 when Toyota released the 22R, they did away with this added adjustability and switched over to a stamped steel fork design that is still used today.

As for the 1981-98 bearing cup, which Toyota calls a bearing hub, they are still being manufactured by Toyota and are available here: http://www.marlincrawler.com/clutch/...release-collar
