Seems like it's a standalone HID with projector set up but in the form of a single H4 bulb? If so, how does that work in the housings we're discussing, which have a light dissipator that doesn't allow the bulb to shine straight out of the housing? I guess I'm just not understanding it - I want maximum (legal and non annoying) output and illumination with my Hella housings I just bought.

I ran the 90/130 w hella bulbs in my 84 for @ least 3 years, but that was 15-18 years ago. I had no problem with the factory wiring. I swapped the housings and bulbs to my 97 Taco and immediately had to rewire the headlight harness.
I am currently running 55/100 w bulbs in my 81 with out issue. I figure the higher watt high beams are OK since you dim your lights for oncoming traffic...
Roger Brown aka 4crawler off road sells an excellent harness upgrade.

Hella halogen bulb part # H83140011 is an H4 12V 130/90W off-road only headlight bulb designed to work with both high and low beam lights. This bulb has a 40 hour average life and produces a cooler, whiter light. They provide increased visibility and less eye fatigue for drivers.
What's the "40 hour average life"? That sounds pretty darn short if it means what I think it means??

Heck hundreds of Indian engineers contribute to this, and people don't seem to have a problem with it- LOL!
So far, I have seen no objective evidence/reason why I should not go with the less expensive Autopals, plus: I would only be paying for the housing, meaning I can put the rest of the money that Santa's giving me into better street-legal bulbs. So what do you guys think... Silverstars? But before that, Gotta upgrade wiring first

As stated on the last page, that price is for one housing. $45 PER Hella vs $43 for TWO Autopals.

The Osram Night Breaker Plus and Philips Xtreme-Vision get good reviews, as do the Silverstars for the most part (short life complaints). I'm still using the cheap 55W/100W bulbs that came with my Autopals and have no complaints.

I said earlier I bought my Hellas a while ago. That turns out to be about the time my truck was made, 1980.
I've had em in my P/U for about 8 years, Jeep for 10, wife's MG Midget for 2, 74 Chevy van for 8.
In the time they have been in the Toy I haven't had any wire overheating but the Jeep light switch did. I may be wrong but each headlight has it's own fuse on my 80 yota, so they don't overload the circuit.
The Autopals may be fine, I just know 30 years (ok 28) of use on & off road is a lot to expect from a pair of lights. But by the year it make them pretty cheap. I checked 4Wheel Drive Hardware's catalog, they sell the Hellas for $39 each with bulbs.
I tried to find some cheap Halogen bulbs for the Toy and couldn't stand the light pattern so I took the ones from the Jeep. That's about a objective as I can be.
I got the Toyota to use temporarily til I fixed the Jeep. Haven't run the Jeep for 5 years now.
