Hmm...do you have a photo of the place it should go? I mostly know my 22R, but I recently bought a 78 with a 20R...and honestly I haven't checked yet to see if it's manual or electric. If I think of it I'll check today and see. But it just started snowing here and we're expecting single digits with 1-2ft of snow...so I may get lazy

My pictures are too big i'm trying to crop them down. but it's supposed to go on the front of the head on the passenger side of the engine

I posted a picture on here in the photos section titled "fuel pump plate location" you should be able to search for it
Thank you very much for taking time to do so.

Yeah, looks like mine goes out at an angle so the pump will fit. Hopefully some people with 20Rs will chime in here. Not sure if you can find a thermostat housing from a 22R and just swap it on? Or if they're different enough that it won't work.

My 80 20r is the same as 83s 22r. I picked up a thermostat housing from a turbo engine that goes straight forward and won't fit with the mechanical fuel pump.
I like going to self service junkyards, you can learn a lot about your truck by looking at the junkers. And I've learned a lot about how to work on mine by ripping into one I don't have to drive later.

I too have encountered this problem, when i worked at a parts store i noticed that there are 2 different routes for the fittings on the 20r fuel pumps, i would suggest checking the brands, one will fit one wont. i dont know why this is but i too experienced this back when i was trouble shooting my vapor lock.

Thank you for all the replies. Helped a lot. I've got a housing from a carbed 22r ordered as well as a spacer for the mech. fuel pump
Does it hurt to pull gas through the old electric fuel pump with a mechanical one? anyone know how long the bolts that hold the mech. pump on are?

I don't know anything about electric fuel pumps, but I'm not positive that you can get any fuel to flow if the pump isn't working. I wouldn't think it's a "flow through" system, being a pump and all. Like I said, on this, I have no direct experience, but I can't think of any pump that allows water through unless it's actually pumping.
For most little bolts like this, especially when there are only two or three, I get them from the dealership. That way you know you have the right size and thread style.

I ran into the thread style problem when replacing a doughnut gasket. the hardware stores kept telling me i had messed the threads up haha finally a napa employee advised me to go to toyota.
I have installed 2 inline fuel pumps and they both worked for about a month then stopped so I guess my next part to find is a tank for a mech. pump or just the insert/straw ( dunno what it's called) to bolt in the fuel pumps place if that's possible.

the mechanical pump can pull fuel threw an electric pump.
i blew the 22re in my 87, found a cheap 22r ($50) so i put that in. all i did was unhook the efi fuse and unplug the fuel pump. It worked perfectly. a couple years later i found a 22re and swapped that back in. never touched the stock pump in the tank that the 22re's use..
