You can get an engnbldr 261C cam, headers and a weber carb if you'd like to liven it up a bit. http://engnbldr.com/toyota-hotlicks.html
if you want more power, you can run a 1st gen 22r bottom end with your 20r head... this along with cam, oversize valves, headers and carb can bring you up to about 130hp (from stock 85-90)

3300 or 3400 around 60-65, screaming. That's with 31's. 4.38 I thought is what's in our 79 axles, don't know 4ths ratio. Not having an overdrive makes it pretty slow. Engine swap would allow you to tow, but that thing is a beauty. I think you should just keep driving in the slow lane so everyone can admire it.

Wow, that is a really clean truck, just beautiful. Please don't hack it up!!
My 1981 SR5 is bone stock and also runs on 30 x 9.5's. I have no trouble cruising at 70 mph in 5th gear when needed, although it takes awhile to get there! In 5th gear it really likes 65 or so and putts around just fine at that speed, although 70 doesn't feel like I'm pushing it.. I would think a 5 speed swap (from what I read the later 5 speeds are stronger than the early trannies) would at least get you to respectable highway speeds---I really can't say how much faster my truck is because I rarely hit the Interstate and mostly see only local Highways and county roads. I haven't exceeded 70-72 or so in the few months I have had mine.....Like others have said just stay in the slow lane and count all the thumbs ups you get, which I'm sure would be plentiful with such a nice Gen 1. Our trucks are tanks, so who cares how fast they are...however I am never passed after a 2" rain on a washed out Texas County road! Get a diesel for your towing but stay off the County roads!!
BTW, I just shorted out my keyboard slobbering over your truck.
