I'm trying to replace the dashpot on my 93 4runner, v6, and I'm finding it impossible to access the long screw that is holding the dashpot in place. Long and short flathead screwdrivers will not work; the angle is too far off center to use a long screwdriver. Any suggestions so I can save the $60 the dealer wants to charge?

Also, I read on this site that someone replace the stock screw with one that takes an allen wrench. Does anyone know the thread size so I can do this also?

It looks like I'm still have problems posting so I will try to explain what the Dashpot is again. The Dashpot is a mechanism that is activated whenever you take your foot off of the gas making the engine ease to idle. It is disengaged as soon as you step on the gas. On my truck it is located on the driver's side and slightly forward of the throttle body but mounted to the throttle body. Follow one of the twisted wire cables over a cam. It is at the other end of the cam where a threaded adjusting screw meets a plunger. The plunger is part of the Dashpot. The plunger has an accordian type boot covering the joint where the plunger enters the sleeve of the Dashpot. Immediately behind the plunger is a 1" (+/-) disk that looks like a smaller version of car's thermostat. Next is a black 3/4" deep cylinder with a cap; it is nearly the size of a plastic coffee scoop. Toyota part number 22202-65030.

To get mine off I used to use a pair of pliers and turn the screw that way. It worked fine, but left a little indentation on the screw. Give it a try.

ok, I'll try the pliers or vice grips. I have one of those 90 degree screwdrivers but the head wants to leave the slot whenever I start to turn it. I cannot hold the screwdriver in position. Replacing the slot-head-screw with an allen-head is a good idea but may not with the effort or time for a componet that is not replaced too oftern.
